Volunteer Program The Coastal Georgia Historical Society and St. Simons Lighthouse Museum has a group of over 75 active, dedicated volunteers who assist in the daily operations. Volunteers are not paid -- not because they are worthless, but because they are priceless. Our volunteers enrich our organization and are an exceptionally important part of the Coastal Georgia Historical Society. As a not-for-profit organization we rely on volunteers to help present our museums to our guests each and every day. If you are interested in interacting with guests, helping maintain historic treasures, and being involved in your community, we have a place for you! A volunteer can choose to work at either the St. Simons Lighthouse Museum or the Maritime Center at the Historic Coast Guard Station. Opportunities available for volunteers include: Education - Assist staff with school groups, activities and outreach programs. Museum Guide/Docent - Interpret the history of the museums and the southern coast of Georgia, answering questions from patrons and acting as admissions clerk. Research and Collections - Work with the curator on various projects in the collection and archives. Special Events - Help set up events and host guests at a variety of events. Administration - Clerical, data entry, filing, newsletter and mailing opportunities. Facilities Maintenance - Assist staff in minor repairs and preservation of the historic structures. Volunteering for CGHS is a fun and rewarding experience that offers docents the chance to meet people from all around the world. On an annual basis volunteers can partake in quarterly social events including trips to other historic sites, lectures and the annual volunteer appreciation luncheon.
